The Mikado
The Junior School June production of Gilbert and Sullivan’s classic story The Mik ado was an extravaganza of colour, animation and glorious sound. The 96- strong cast negotiated with skill and discipline the narrow confines of the Auditorium stage, with perhaps more than a little rehearsal help from producer Mrs Virginia Currie and musical director Mrs Sheila Nelson. Danielle Barrett changed gender for an energetic playing of the part of Ko-Ko, the Lord High Executioner, while Ruaridh Cameron (wandering minstrel Nanki-Poo) and Jessica Smart (Yum-Yum) were a tenderly expressive pair of love-birds. David Barcroft, padded out and pompous as Pooh-Bah, Lord High Everything Else, appealed to the Prep School audience who attended the dress rehearsal.
Matthew Orr was a stately Mikado, and Niamh Allum worked hard to become Katisha, an ugly old woman. Of all the songs, perhaps the favourite was that performed by the parasol-wielding “Three Little Maids”. Décor was dramatically Japanese with enormous banners of kimono-clad figures in strong colours.
